PORTLING COASTGUARD RESCUE TEAM

Portling Coastguard Rescue Team are based in the small hamlet of Portling, near Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway. Covering the coastline of the south west of Scotland from the River Urr, Kippford east to the Scotland/England Border near Gretna and on occasion beyond. In 2005, the Solway Sector began providing SAR cover for several inland lochs and waterways. The station is part of the Solway Sector, which is managed by Sector Manager Roger Gee. Incidents are co-ordinated from the operations room in the Liverpool MRCC. The members of the CRT are trained in a number of Search and Rescue Techniques, First Aid, Rope Access and Water Rescue. The team comprises of eleven members who come from all walks of life, One of Portling Team is a third generation coastguard, following in the footsteps of father and grandfather and has over 20 years service. The remaining members service ranges from 8 years to 8 months. They are on call 24 hours a day and are alerted by pagers. Once arriving at the station the team can be on route to an incident within minutes. Recently, due to the vast area the Portling Coastguard Rescue Team has to cover, an Immediate Response Team was formed in Annan, this reduced the response times to the eastern area of their sector.
